"We Are Brothers": Two Popes, Together

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

...and here it is: in a moment without precedent in the 2,000-year annals of the Roman church, two Popes together in life.

Ten days after Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio's election as the 266th pontiff, the three-hour meeting between Pope Francis and Pope-emeritus Benedict XVI at Castel Gandolfo included lunch and a 45-minute private discussion.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The new Pope arrived by helicopter at the papal "Camp David" in the Alban Hills shortly after noon local time, his now-retired predecessor – the first pontiff to voluntarily depart the office in over six centuries – having come to welcome him at the nearby heliport.

According to a briefing from the lead Vatican spokesman, Jesuit Fr Federico Lombardi, when the duo entered the villa's chapel for a moment of prayer, Benedict emphatically motioned at Francis to take the single armchair and pre-dieu reserved for the Pope.

Instead, the pontiff told his predecessor, "No – we are brothers," gesturing for them to kneel side by side in the same pew, which they did.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

While hundreds of faithful and media alike waited in the square outside the villa's front portal, hoping to see (and even chanting for) an appearance from the twin Popes on the balcony above, none was made.

Having given his predecessor an icon of Our Lady of Humility "in gratitude for [Benedict's] pontificate" before departing (below), Francis returned to the Vatican by helicopter shortly before 3pm.

Temporarily in residence at Castel – a place for which he's had an immense fondness – since his resignation on 28 February, Benedict is expected to return to Vatican City in late April or May, when renovations are completed on his new home, a former convent in the gardens.

In an address to the priests of Rome shortly before his emotional departure – on which he pledged his "unconditional reverence and obedience" to whoever would be chosen to succeed him – Benedict said that he would be "hidden from the world" in his post-papacy, yet close by in prayer and spirit.

While maintaining the papal white, in a concession to his new status, B16's cassock did not include a shoulder-cape, nor did he wear the white watered-silk sash.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Likewise, as the Fisherman's Ring he received at his 2005 inaugural was destroyed on his departure from office – in keeping with long-standing tradition for the end of a Pope's reign – as foreseen, Papa Ratzinger has taken to wearing a copy of the "Council ring," the unadorned gold band given by Paul VI to the Fathers of Vatican II at the gathering's close in December 1965.

Meanwhile, as he still acclimates to the papacy – while upending many of its long-standing conventions at a rapid clip – tomorrow's Palm Sunday Mass opens Francis' first turn at Holy Week, traditionally the most intense and high-profile period of a Pope's calendar.

As previously noted, the Vatican announced on Thursday that the new pontiff has decided to open Catholicism's holiest period of the year – the Easter Triduum – by celebrating his Holy Thursday evening Mass at Rome's youth prison, as opposed to one of the city's major basilicas, which have hosted the rite for centuries.

Paus Fransiskus Akan Basuh Kaki Para Napi
Kamis, 28 Maret 2013 | 12:33 WIB

Pope washes young offenders’ feet at Holy Thursday Mass
By CAROL GLATZ on Thursday, 28 March 2013

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Pope Francis washes the foot of a young offender (CNS)

Pope Francis washed the feet of 10 young men and two young women during the Mass of the Lord’s Supper at the Casal del Marmo young offenders’ institute in Rome this evening.

During the evening Mass at the prison for young people, Pope Francis washed the feet of 12 young people of different nationalities and faiths, including at least two Muslims, who are housed at the juvenile detention facility.

The ceremony of washing another’s feet is important, the Pope said, because it shows that “the person who is most high among us must be at the service of the others”.

It also means that “we have to help one another, each one,” he said during the Holy Thursday Mass.

The Pope broke with a papal Holy Week tradition of celebrating the evening Mass at a Rome basilica.

While the prison Mass marked a first for the modern papacy, the practice was nothing new to Pope Francis who, as Archbishop of Buenos Aires used to celebrate the Mass of the Lord’s Supper – which reflects on the call to imitate Christ by serving one another and commemorates Jesus’ institution of the Eucharist – in prisons, hospitals or shelters for the poor and marginalised.

Held in the prison’s small chapel, the Mass was the second of two Holy Thursday liturgies over which the pope presided. The first was a morning chrism Mass in St Peter’s Basilica.

The nearly 50 detainees, including about a dozen women, attended the Mass. Detainees did the readings and led the prayers of the faithful.

A group of young people who volunteer at the prison, as well as a local charismatic group, provided the music, playing acoustic guitar and leading the singing.

In his brief homily, which he delivered off-the-cuff, Pope Francis explained what the ritual he was about to perform meant and what Jesus was teaching his disciples when he washed their feet at the Last Supper.

“To wash your feet, this is a symbol, a sign that I am at your service,” the Pope said. “But it also means that we have to help each other.”

He told the young detainees that it was normal to get angry at others, “but let it be, let it be”. If that person “asks you a favour, do it. Let’s help each other,” he told them.

He added that he would wash their feet with love.

“I do it with my heart because it is my duty as priest and as bishop; I have to be at your service,” he said.

“It’s a duty that comes from my heart because I love doing this, because this is what the Lord taught me,” he added.

“This sign is a caress from Jesus,” he said, “because Jesus came exactly for this, to serve and to help us.”

He said that, while he was washing the feet of the 12 young men and women, all at the Mass should ask themselves: “Am I really willing to help others?”

He urged all the detainees to follow the Lord’s example and help others because that way “we will also do good” in the world.

Vatican Radio reported that the Pope knelt on both knees before the youths, washed, dried and then kissed their feet.

The Pope later exchanged the Sign of Peace – a hug and kiss – with the young people whose feet he washed. He also distributed Communion, which he had not been doing at more public Masses.

While media outlets were not allowed inside the facility, Vatican Radio offered a live audio feed and the Vatican spokesman Fr Federico Lombardi briefed reporters afterwards. He said the ritual was “extremely moving” because kneeling on both knees was very demanding for a 76-year-old pope.

At the end of the Mass, Pope Francis greeted the residents and 150 members of the prison staff and other guests in the gym.

The Pope thanked everyone for their warm welcome and said he was happy to be with them.

In strong words of encouragement, he told the young people: “Press on! Don’t let yourselves be robbed of hope. Understood?”

The Pope greeted the residents with hugs and gave each of the young detainees a large chocolate egg and a traditional Italian Easter cake shaped like a dove.

The detainees, who range in age from 14 to 21, then gave the pope a wooden crucifix and kneeler they made in the detention center’s woodshop.

Among those concelebrating with the Pope were Cardinal Agostino Vallini, papal vicar for Rome, Archbishop Giovanni Becciu, the number three official at the Vatican Secretariat of State, Capuchin Fr Gaetano Greco, prison chaplain, two deacons and two seminarians.

Only eight of the detainees are Italian. The rest are immigrants, many of whom are Muslim while some others are non-believers, Fr Greco said. Many come from North Africa or Slavic nations.

Explaining to them who the Pope was and why his visit was important “wasn’t easy”, Fr Greco told the Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano.

“I felt dejected for a bit when I saw faces lacking emotion or others curious as to why I was so enthusiastic,” he said.

But the silence was soon broken, the priest said, when a boy from Naples clutched his own head and shouted: “Oh, Mother of God, the Pope here!?”

Once the others saw the boy’s astonishment and happiness, they started to understand “that this was something truly out of the ordinary, and they began to ask questions. Little by little I saw them getting more enthused, and from that moment on it hasn’t died down,” Fr Greco said.

The priest, who has been chaplain at the facility for more than 30 years, said he was sure the Pope’s visit would have a positive impact on the detainees, as did the visits from Blessed John Paul II in 1980 and Pope Benedict XVI in 2007.

The full text of Pope Francis’s homily:

This is moving, Jesus washes the feet of his disciples. Peter understands nothing. He refuses but Jesus explains to him. Jesus, God did this, and He Himself explains it to the disciples. ‘Do you realize what I have done for you? You call me ‘teacher’ and ‘master,’ and rightly so, for indeed I am. If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another’s feet. I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do’.

It is the example set by Our Lord, it’s important for Him to wash their feet, because among us the one who is highest up must be at the service of others. This is a symbol, it is a sign – washing your feet means I am at your service. And we are too, among each other, but we don’t have to wash each other’s feet each day. So what does this mean? That we have to help each other…sometimes I would get angry with one someone, but we must let it go and if they ask a favour of do it!

Help one another. This is what Jesus teaches us. This is what I do. And I do it with my heart. I do this with my heart because it is my duty, as a priest and bishop I must be at your service. But it is a duty that comes from my heart and a duty I love. I love doing it because this is what the Lord has taught me. But you too must help us and help each other, always. And thus in helping each other we will do good for each other.

Now we will perform the ceremony of the Washing of the Feet and we must each one of us think, Am I really willing to help others? Just think of that. Think that this sign is Christ’s caress, because Jesus came just for this, to serve us, to help us
.

Welcome Jesus as a friend, Pope encourages at Easter Vigil
By Estefania Aguirre

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Pope Francis during the Easter Vigil Mass in St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican on March 30, 2013.

Vatican City, Mar 30, 2013 / 04:07 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- Pope Francis called on Christians to let the risen Jesus enter their lives and to welcome him with trust as a friend during the Church's most holy night of the year.

“If up until now you have kept him at a distance, step forward...he will receive you with open arms,” Pope Francis said at Saint Peter's Basilica during the Easter Vigil Mass.

“If you have been indifferent, take a risk, you won’t be disappointed,” he told thousands gathered at the Vatican on March 30.

At the opening of the liturgy – which Pope Francis concelebrated with numerous cardinals – candles were lit among the faithful and passed in complete silence, illuminating the church as the Easter candle procession reached the altar.

Over 40,000 flowers and plants from Holland were used to decorate the basilica including daffodils and lilies.

Pope Francis also baptized four people during the service, including a 17-year-old U.S. Citizen of Vietnamese descent, a 30-year-old Albanian, a 30-year-old Russian and a 23-year-old Italian.

After the baptisms, a white cloth was placed over each of the four and flame from the main Easter candle was shared with smaller candles which were given to them to hold. Pope Francis then confirmed them as Catholics, making the sign of the cross on their forehead with oil and kissing them each on the cheek. The four also received their first Holy Communion during the Mass.

During his homily, the new Pope said that if following Christ seems difficult, “don’t be afraid.”

“Trust him, be confident that he is close to you, he is with you and he will give you the peace you are looking for and the strength to live as he would have you do.”

If people remember what God has done for them, he noted, they will not fear what lies in store for their lives.

“To remember what God has done and continues to do for me, for us, to remember the road we have travelled is what opens our hearts to hope for the future,” he said.

The Pope observed that “newness often makes us fearful, including the newness which God brings us, the newness which God asks of us.”

“We are afraid of God’s surprises...he always surprises us!” he exclaimed. However, “Let us not close our hearts, let us not lose confidence, let us never give up.”

Pope Francis reflected on the resurrection narrative from the Gospel reading where the women were sad and afraid to find the tomb of Jesus opened and empty after his death.

“Jesus no longer belongs to the past, but lives in the present and is projected towards the future, he is the everlasting 'today' of God,” he emphasized.

Because of this, Pope Francis explained, sadness is the wrong place to look for life. “How often does Love have to tell us 'why do you look for the living among the dead?'” he asked.

“Our daily problems and worries can wrap us up in ourselves, in sadness and bitterness,” Pope Francis noted. That “is where death is” and “is not the place to look for the one who is alive.”

“Let the risen Jesus enter your life, welcome him as a friend, with trust: he is life!”

Quote :
"The Mercy of God Always Triumphs!"

EASTER GREETING OF POPE FRANCIS "URBI ET ORBI"
ST PETER'S SQUARE
31 MARCH 2013

Dear brothers and sisters in Rome and throughout the world, Happy Easter! Happy Easter!

What a joy it is for me to announce this message: Christ is risen! I would like it to go out to every house and every family, especially where the suffering is greatest, in hospitals, in prisons…

Most of all, I would like it to enter every heart, for it is there that God wants to sow this Good News: Jesus is risen, there is hope for you, you are no longer in the power of sin, of evil! Love has triumphed, mercy has been victorious! The mercy of God always triumphs!

We too, like the women who were Jesus’ disciples, who went to the tomb and found it empty, may wonder what this event means (cf. Lk 24:4). What does it mean that Jesus is risen? It means that the love of God is stronger than evil and death itself; it means that the love of God can transform our lives and let those desert places in our hearts bloom. The love God can do this!

This same love for which the Son of God became man and followed the way of humility and self-giving to the very end, down to hell - to the abyss of separation from God - this same merciful love has flooded with light the dead body of Jesus, has transfigured it, has made it pass into eternal life. Jesus did not return to his former life, to earthly life, but entered into the glorious life of God and he entered there with our humanity, opening us to a future of hope.

This is what Easter is: it is the exodus, the passage of human beings from slavery to sin and evil to the freedom of love and goodness. Because God is life, life alone, and we are his glory: the living man (cf. Irenaeus, Adversus Haereses, 4,20,5-7).

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Dear brothers and sisters, Christ died and rose once for all, and for everyone, but the power of the Resurrection, this passover from slavery to evil to the freedom of goodness, must be accomplished in every age, in our concrete existence, in our everyday lives. How many deserts, even today, do human beings need to cross! Above all, the desert within, when we have no love for God or neighbour, when we fail to realize that we are guardians of all that the Creator has given us and continues to give us. God’s mercy can make even the driest land become a garden, can restore life to dry bones (cf. Ez 37:1-14).

So this is the invitation which I address to everyone: Let us accept the grace of Christ’s Resurrection! Let us be renewed by God’s mercy, let us be loved by Jesus, let us enable the power of his love to transform our lives too; and let us become agents of this mercy, channels through which God can water the earth, protect all creation and make justice and peace flourish.

And so we ask the risen Jesus, who turns death into life, to change hatred into love, vengeance into forgiveness, war into peace. Yes, Christ is our peace, and through him we implore peace for all the world.

Peace for the Middle East, and particularly between Israelis and Palestinians, who struggle to find the road of agreement, that they may willingly and courageously resume negotiations to end a conflict that has lasted all too long. Peace in Iraq, that every act of violence may end, and above all for dear Syria, for its people torn by conflict and for the many refugees who await help and comfort. How much blood has been shed! And how much suffering must there still be before a political solution to the crisis will be found?

Peace for Africa, still the scene of violent conflicts. In Mali, may unity and stability be restored; in Nigeria, where attacks sadly continue, gravely threatening the lives of many innocent people, and where great numbers of persons, including children, are held hostage by terrorist groups. Peace in the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and in the Central African Republic, where many have been forced to leave their homes and continue to live in fear.

Peace in Asia, above all on the Korean peninsula: may disagreements be overcome and a renewed spirit of reconciliation grow.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Peace in the whole world, still divided by greed looking for easy gain, wounded by the selfishness which threatens human life and the family, selfishness that continues in human trafficking, the most extensive form of slavery in this twenty-first century; human trafficking is the most extensive form of slavery in this twenty-first century! Peace to the whole world, torn apart by violence linked to drug trafficking and by the iniquitous exploitation of natural resources! Peace to this our Earth! Made the risen Jesus bring comfort to the victims of natural disasters and make us responsible guardians of creation.

Dear brothers and sisters, to all of you who are listening to me, from Rome and from all over of the world, I address the invitation of the Psalm: "Give thanks to the Lord for he is good; for his steadfast love endures for ever. Let Israel say: ‘His steadfast love endures for ever’" (Ps 117:1-2).

* * *
Dear Brothers and Sisters, to you who have come from all over the world to this Square at the heart of Christianity, and to you linked by modern technology, I repeat my greeting: Happy Easter!

Bear in your families and in your countries the message of joy, hope and peace which every year, on this day, is powerfully renewed.

May the risen Lord, the conqueror of sin and death, be a support to you all, especially to the weakest and neediest. Thank you for your presence and for the witness of your faith. A thought and a special thank-you for the beautiful flowers, which come from the Netherlands. To all of you I affectionately say again: may the risen Christ guide all of you and the whole of humanity on the paths of justice, love and peace.

cheers
