History of the Beads
The rosary beads have a long history which is not precisely understood, according to the Catholic Encyclopedia, the use of beads and other devices for counting repetitions of prayers has occurred since at least the earliest days of Christianity, and may have an even longer history among other religious traditions, such as Buddhism.

While the Rosary is the most popularly recited prayer with the rosary beads, Christendom Awake explains how other prayers have been counted with the beads since as early as the 13th century. These prayers, sometimes called chaplets, are usually associated with monastics and are sometimes said to be inspired by visions of holy figures such as Mary or the archangel Michael.

Form of the Beads
A rosary typically consists of five sets of 10 beads each separated by a larger bead. A shorter strand connected to the circular portion will have: a crucifix, a large bead, three small beads and a large bead. In areas of religious persecution, however, as well as in the military, smaller and alternative versions such as bracelets, rings, and credit card-shaped rosaries have had popularity.

While most rosaries are constructed of glass, plastic, or wood, any number of materials, including gold and silver, are possible. These materials are often dictated by local material availability, and in third world countries, demand is said to far outweigh supply. Organizations such as Our Lady's Rosary Makers respond to this need by assembling and distributing millions of free rosaries each year.
